It's soda, here in New England. Or "I'm gonna have a Coke," which could mean anything from Sprite to Root Beer to Dr. Pepper. All tissues are Kleenex and when we get a cut, we reach for a Band-Aid. It's kind of a marketing nightmare, here in these parts :)

I say pop, my husband says soda, and my family says soft drink. I'm not sure where I picked up saying "pop," but it was definitely a late-college development which is weird since I went to college in my hometown, where those who call it pop are in the minority.

A lot of people who ordered drinks from the drive thru where I worked in high school used "Coke" to mean any variation of carbonated beverage. We finally got used to saying "Diet or regular?" to weed out the people who'd say, "And a large Coke," only to then protest that they wanted a Sprite and why didn't we ask what kind of Coke they wanted?

Best of all, though? The little dude I kidsit calls it "spicy water."

I'm so disappointed. I was sure pop would win out and I'd have some statistical evidence to back me up. Thanks a lot, guys.

POP! I'm from a dark blue region living in a dark pee yellow area now. I've now found myself saying "soda," which I hate. I hate myself for loving pop but saying soda.

sigh.
